Welcome aboard! ¡Bienvenid@s a bordo!

My name is Daniel Castillo Hidalgo (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1984) and I currently work as assistant lecturer at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain), exploring the African Maritime Economic History and other related topics. I am researcher at the IATEXT. Moreover, I am also  accredited as Associated Lecturer (Profesor Contratado Doctor) by the ANECA (2017).

I obtained my BA in History at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (2007) and Advanced Studies Certificate (2009), where I obtained my Ph.D. in Economic History in 2012. I was interim assistant lecturer at the University of Coruña (Spain). I teach BA courses on World Economic History, Business History, Labour History and African Economic History (MA). I have  visited different institutions such as Sud-Bretagne (Lorient), La Rochelle, Université Cheikh Anta Diop (Dakar), Poitiers and Nantes.

My research agenda focuses on African port systems evolution since the 1850 decade up to present and the way how the transport infrastructures impacted on the regional economies and their economic structures. Hence, transport infrastructures, commodities, workers and institutions are key elements in my work. To sum up, I am also interested on the configuration of social and economic inequalities under colonial rule in Africa in historical perspective.
